Oh to be a home

Yesterday our people met their people and handed over a bunch of cheques and now we are the proud owners of our own little bit of land and a funny weatherboard house in the suburbs. As soon as it was confirmed, I went over to the real-estate agent and picked up the keys and took Mum and Grandma over to see the new house. And, wouldn’t you know it, the guy was still in it! Curses! It’s a lucky thing it was just me and my mum and grandma standing there feeling a bit put out and not me and my family and a huge truck full of furniture with a couple of pepped-up moving guys who are charging by the hour. Anyway, Mr Previous-home-owner promised to be out this afternoon… and was just leaving when we rocked up at 6.30pm to have a look around. So now it is really ours. It feels weird – I can’t even imagine living there and feeling like it’s home but I guess that comes with time and a huge amount of paint.
And now, some more links. Today’s theme is “North, South, East and West”… a bunch of assorted delights. The main thing they have in common is that I feel some affinity with them despite our different paths.

Firstly, North.
Kitchenette: She lives here in Switzerland! Lucky girl. Family life, food, and great photos of a life so similar yet so far away. Like many other mama-bloggers I feel like she is a good friend just from reading her blog.

South? South of what? South of me is hard to do… so I am picking South Australia and Hop Skip Jump: although I haven’t been reading her journal for a terribly long time, I feel as though Fiona is possibly a long lost twin sister of mine who lives in Adelaide where I spent my childhood. We share so many interests and our little girls are two peas in a pod… Audrey & Amelia.

East is Momo – Momo Freaks Out: I have been lucky enough to meet Miss Momo when she was an editor doing editory type things in Melbourne. Now she lives in Japan and on monday she met The Very Cool Little Boy Who Lives in a Temple. Momo Freaks Out is, in my opinion (and many others’ too I am sure), one of the best blogs on the web.

And West? 42Short: James lives on the other side of the world with a different kind of life doing different kinds of things but I can’t help but feel some familiarity in his words. I’ve been hooked on 42Short for ages.

We first saw the house we eventually bought wheb there were renters in it, who were NOT very friendly (well, they were about to loose their house, so you can see why), and I felt like we were trespassing during our walk-through.
After we moved in, I still had this feeling like it was THEIR HOUSE for about, oh, five minutes. And then, as we moved in and made plans for how we were going to remodel, it was instantly ours!!

    Good luck.

  2. Congratulations to the house!
It is going to be so fun to se pictures of house decorating here at your blog. Before/after is fun to save when you no longer remember what the house looked like when you first got it!

    Good luck!

Finally! Congrats to you all! Same thing happened to us. They still had stuff in the house and a moving truck out the front which was only half packed. We went and sat in the park for three hours waiting for them to go and give us OUR HOUSE!!!All the best for your new adventure.

Same thing happened to us too. We ended up camping out one night and then spending several nights in a motel. And all our stuff was on a moving van and had to be stored, and that cost $$$. Horrible, horrible, horrible.

  6. Congratulations on the house! We’ve been in ours almost 3 years now, and it’s such a good feeling to know that it belongs to us! Of course, this year we have to replace the roof…
