Because we didn't get too excited

After many nights of lying awake thinking about cheap wood paneling and other such fine features, we decided to pass up the crazy house. In the end it wasn’t the fact that it was crazy or wood paneled or really, really ugly that turned us off it, it was the fact that it was further away from the centre of the-universe-as-we-know-it than we wanted to be. I am aware that universe centres shift easily and quickly, but if we are going to be that far out, then I would far prefer to “down size” and go and have a pond with ducks in the country or at least live in beautiful Eltham! Annnyway we passed on it and are now moving on and the search continues with renewed optimism and a fresh sense of what it is we really want.
So now it’s time to get focused on some craft projects. Obviously there’s the Accessorised Elephant that needs doing for the first Month of Softies. I have spent a bit of time working on a pattern with head shapes based on ones that can be found in my all time favourite toy making book “The Splendid Soft Toy Book”. Unfortunately they all look a bit weird – I want to put this head on a doll’s body and they are all too big and puffy… so I am now back to making up my own and of course it’s looking even weirder. Big-P keeps giving my elephants looks that clearly say “what on earth are you thinking??” and I shout (rather over emotionally because sewing these heads can get a little tense) “It’s meant to look a bit funny!”. Hopefully I can get it to look exactly like the funny elephant in my head and not the elephant man.. Number four is going under the needle tonight.

Apart from this, I am also planning Amelia’s Christmas Stocking.

I found this little picture of a cushion made by Beth Lacefield in the latest edition of Home Companion and I suddenly thought that something like this might look quite fun appliqued on a stocking with bright buttons and some rickrack. This is my first foray into Home Companion. It caught my attention with it’s article on one of my long time favourites, Jennifer Murphy – which is accompanied by great photos of her work and her studio. It’s quite a nice mag – a bit on the all-american, all apple-pie side, but at least the projects are all fresh. Martha Stewart Kids got left on the shelf this month due to looking like it was full of totally rehashed articles and projects… what’s that about? What a disappointment.

I totally agree with your observations of the MS Kids mag. In fact it has seemed that way for the last couple issues.Good luck with the elephant!

Yes, it WAS full of old ideas! In fact I was so disappointed that I wrote them an email listing off all the duplicate ideas. I haven’t heard back yet. I feel very cheated! There were 18 old ideas. I think Family Fun and Home Companion are much more original, especially these days. 🙂

  3. I agree….I was so disappointed by Martha kids for winter….I had seen it all before…but the applique is so darling cute…can’t wait to see your stocking:)

  4. oh that applique is gorgeous and would look so sweet on Amelia’s little stocking 🙂 My mum made mine when I was little and put bells on the top so I could try and catch Santa when he came to fill it! Also I wholeheartedly agree about Kids Magazine… I bought it and am somewhat disspoainted. Although the layout and photos are always cute to look at… xx ps thanks again for the recipe 🙂

  5. I was thinking of you last night-My husband and I have become obessed with knitting. I am an illustrator, a time consuming craft, have a child and a flight attendant and now I KNIT? How do you have TIME to do these wonderful things? Help, this is your bolgs fault! I need tips for time management!

  6. I am a big fan of ME Home Companion, even though at times it is over the top sweet. It always has great articles on artists and their studios. Did you see Tracy Porter’s house then? Loved it! And I think the paper dolls in every issue are darling….

  7. Sorry the house wasn’t the right one. 🙁 You’ll find the perfect one soon!
Thank you for the link to Jennifer Murphy’s site! I saw her bears and such in Home Companion, but didn’t note the web addy. Every piece is a little jewel!

And I must admit to being a big fan of Home Companion, but then since I’m American I guess the apple-pie sweet stuff doesn’t bother me too much. I get a ton of ideas for projects in every issue. I guess you could also see the influence in my own artwork.

I love your blog! A group of childrens illustrators here in the US all read and discuss the various illustrator’s blogs that we’ve found recently, and we think yours is the BEST! And your artwork is wonderful!!!

  8. Did you see the doco. on the making of Medulla last night on SBS? I watched a bit and look forward to watching the rest on tape… Do you order your mags over the net or buy them locally?

Hi Claire, I am such a fan of your work! :+D .. the current copy of Kids is the first one I have ever bought, so I thought it really speccy .. but I am a bit behind *blushes*. You know, I did read in the employment section on the martha website that they are looking for a new Art Director for the Kids mag – maybe that has something to do with the old ideas being repeated??

  10. That pillow is totally cute. My mother-in-law is on a making pillows vendetta right now, and maybe I have just found my inspiration.

  11. I think the pillow idea is darling. You are so crafty, Claire. One of my problems is finishing all those things that I start!
