2004 = 2002 repeat

How did it get to be almost the end of November already?? How is it that I am filling in my super new Eames 2004 engagement calendar with 2004 engagements already??
I have been slumping around for a couple of weeks wondering what the future has in store. So I have decided to go back and do that course that I applied for a couple of years ago – Screen Print Design. There’s no guarantee I will get accepted again but I thought it was worth giving a go. I want to only do a couple of subjects a semester but it will give me access to facilities and the knowledge that are otherwise out of reach. I read back over that 2001 entry and the list of subjects still inspire me and still make me go “oooooh how cool!” on the inside.

My main concern (which embarrasses me to admit but will be good to get out) is that I will have to drive across the city to get to the campus. As stupid as that sounds I am still a very nervous (sweaty palms, heart palpitations, out-of-control feeling) driver and I would rather sit in this dark study and continue to slog away at client illustration work rather than drive across town and experience LIGHT! JOY! INSPIRATION! and SOCIAL INTERACTION!

2004 will be full of study and house buying. It sounds like what we were aiming to do in 2002 and then I got pregnant!

  1. I love your log and look forward to any new updates!Going back to school sounds wonderful! I think that the most you drive the most confident you get – I remember when i started driving only 5 1/2 years ago (before then, only took the Train or ride with friends or taxis) – and i remember being avoiding at all cost highways – 5 years later my fears are gone. Parking in the city is a different story he he he – but I’m getting better at it!
    Best of luck to you!
Happy Thanksgiving to you and family!
By they way, i added a link to your page (from my web site – on the online journal page). I hope you don’t mind!

  6. ah. the having a baby thing certainly throws new perspectives on things…
    a house?

that is a good idea. we ended up with 8 acres of bush…and now have to work out how to build one.

    cheers.

  7. Oh how I missed reading loobylu updates! Good luck with getting back to some study Claire. You will love it!

  8. How about doing a car control course? I did one a few years ago at Sandown Raceway and it was positively the BEST thing to do. Will help your skills and confidence hugely.
http://www.murcott.com.au is the link to the centre I used. Well worth the cost.

  9. Hello Claire,
I used to rad your journal ages ago, but then I went overseas. It’s good to see that you are still online, as talented as ever and wow, you’ve had a baby!

    Best wishes,
    Candi

  12. I am so sad! I haven’t had the chance to visit much lately, and I missed out on Loobylu Christmas Cards.
Have you considered making them available to send as e-Cards?

    Claire –
Go for it while you can! One child is managable and if you have the flexibility to do it now – you really should. Regrets are the worst. You will be so proud of yourself and setting a good example for your daughter!

    Good luck!

  14. ha ha ha- I made revolutionary changes in my life, I moved from the caribbean, bought my first real car, rented a way cool apartment, got a great job as manager of a bookshop and… got pregnant- all in 1 week. LOLOLOL. That was 7 years ago and 2 daughters later. 🙂

  15. Much inspiration to you!
    Good luck with the househunting!

Ooh, studying is wonderful! Good luck.
My brother is doing a screen printing course next year, too. He started it a few years ago and now he’s going back to finish it.

I wonder if it’s the same course – if it is you’re in for one wonderful ride!

Good luck with the driving thing…I remember when I was like that. And I hated driving with other people in the car. I think it’s pretty normal to be nervous. Don’t worry, you’ll shine!

If I remember correctly study always seems like a good idea – but it takes a lot of emotional energy coming up with reasons to avoid going that are substantial enough to ease the guilt. But if you can conquer driving I am sure you can conquer attendance fears as well.

I know what you mean about the driving palpitations – I passed my test when I was 17 and I’ve only really started driving this year (I’m now 30!) It was a necessary evil as the public transport is bad enough without trying to haul a baby+pram+baggage along with me. Anyway, the best driving tip I was given was to talk it through while you’re driving, which is how the police are trained and part of the advanced test (here in England at least). It sounds daft, but it really helps. “Okay, I’m in second gear, moving up into third, keeping an eye on the pedestrian crossing up ahead, letting this idiot pull out ahead of me..” etc etc. I guess you feel more in control and it keeps you focussed. Good luck, anyhow. I’ve been doing a decorative textiles course since September, despite having no artistic background, and I love it – it’s great to do something like that for yourself, especially after having a baby.

  19. i read your blog occassionally, originally came to it through anothergirlatplay. I simply want to concur with what you noted about getting to your to-do list that sounded exactly like it did several years ago, pre-baby. my son is almost 3 yrs old and I am just finishing the grad degree i wanted to pursue prior to conceiving and in general, just getting back to being “myself” following this seemingly endless period of adjustment! cheers!lb
