A year of promises
Hello… I thought I’d sneak in a blog post while no one was looking.
2018 marks the 19th year of Loobylu (holy f’n crap!) and it seems sad to be just leaving it mildewing away in the corner (the downfall of all unattended objects in the pacific northwest… the gross black mould seems to advance mercilessly at this time of year).
Instead, I’ll wipe it down with vinegar and put it out in the sun for a while.
Speaking of sun – or lack thereof – here is a very pretty photograph of an old, hand-me-down sofa bathed in pale, wintery light. Apparently, it was once pink and white striped with pretty wooden turned legs. Now the legs are lost in someone else’s junk filled attic and the stripes are two shades of grey. It used to belong to our neighbour. She had it hidden away shamefully and happily exchanged it for a dress. The dress was minimalist, grey and stylish but had the unfortunate effect of making me look like I belonged to a doomsday sect. I was wearing the dress when I discovered the sofa in her house and we made the quick deal. She manages to makes the dress look chic. I manage to make this old sofa look boho-eclectic.. (right??).
Since it’s been with us, it’s had some hard wearing. The upholstery is covered in stains both good and bad (hot chocolate, tears, pen marks, mud, a mysterious foot print, blood nose, squashed insect).
When we hired a dumpster in the summer it almost disappeared inside due to the stains and the weird legless height it sits at, but we kept it on whim, and I am pleased we did.
While it will never be Pinterest-worthy, it’s a familiar old-dog of a thing. It sits in a bay window and is the perfect place to read a book or have a conversation (or snap chat a boy, or lie recovering after a 12 hour stomach virus picked up at a slumber party).
In 2018 it will be a place to keep promises:
Blog more
Meditate more
Talk to the kids more
Reflect more, ruminate less
Draw more
Laugh more
You know, those kind of promises.
Maybe the easiest promise to keep will be to just sit around on the sofa more.
ps. Completely unedited – no apologies. PUBLISH AND BE DAMNED, (reflect more, ruminate less).
PUBLISHED AND BE DAMNED … yes!!!
Beautiful post and so chuffed to see you pop up in the feed reader 🙂
Gosh. I’ve been reading here for so, so, so long.
Hello.
Happy new year.
I actually teared up. We have missed you so much!!! xx
Aww!! Thanks Pip <3
Claire, I love that you can turn even a paragraph about stains on the sofa into such a beautiful snapshot of your family life. I’ve really missed your blog!
Love these promises…
So happy to see the couch is still there. I love the image of you in your underclothes toting it home on your back. Good trade.
Looking forward to more reflections.
seeing a post from you has made me very happy, friend. here’s to more (all of more!) in 2018!
So fun to see you pop back in my feed! Reminds me of the ‘good ol’ days’ of blogging!
