Still working my way through that big list of things to do.
Today I made a mad dash to the library to return a stack of books – but I took a moment to browse the shelves and borrow an even bigger stack of books for holiday reading (and listening – nothing like Library audio books for a long car drive). We’re off to the country for ten days and there’ll be plenty of sitting by the fire in the evenings reading books (usually through closed, exhausted eyelids) and talking about how good it would be if we had enough energy to get up and get out the scrabble board.
I love it when you find a title
in the library which you have eyed off on the shelf at the book shop and decided that to purchase it would be way too indulgent but it’s very nice anyway (see above right).
I also love it when you find a title which you have seen on other lovely people’s blogs and thought “ohh I need to find a copy of that!” and to have it turn up like a little gem in amongst a couple of dozen other far less appealing dvds. (see above left).
I loved My Family and Other Animals when I was younger – I was determined that I would end my days living on a Greek island with a house full of animals (anyone who knows me and my fears and allergies will find this mildly amusing). I recently stepped out (which makes going out sound far more special, which it really is these days) to see that Abba movie … what was it called? Mama Mia! That’s right… with a bunch of girl friends and decided that my younger self had been entirely on the money when it came to nice places to end your days. Ok — enough of my free form ramblings. I am off to keep at that list!
I have ” A Slice of the organic life”. I bought it for my hubby of Christmas (meaning I wanted it and justified the purchase by buying it for him!). I love this book. I get it out all the time for the lovely pictures of things organic and wholesome to muse over. Jam making, gardening, butter churning…mmm. Enjoy your holiday in the country!

I confess to being a lurker but when I saw the picture with today’s post I had to come out. I also have the My Family and Other Animals DVD sitting on my desk, borrowed from a friend. Like you, I loved the books and found the movie to be lots of fun with some fantastic quotes to boot. “vault over a charging boar!?” hehe!I hope you enjoy it!
Oh, I love the library. I have had a good many occasions at the library (well usually searching the online catalogue) when I’ve spied a book I’ve been longing to buy for myself (or the kids). Sometimes the book ain’t so great – and I figure I’ve saved a heap of money and disappointment. Sometimes it’s great and I have to buy the book. Good luck with the list. Have a nice break.
I think I saw that version of My family and Other Animals when it was on the ABC a while ago. The kid playing the lead character is extraordinary.

Working in a library is heaven because we can make stock suggestions for things we’d like to read – and they are usually purchased, yay. (my workplace bought Slice of Organic Life through my request!)
Sheherazade Goldsmith, who wrote A Slice of Organic Life, just put out a Christmas book called A Greener Christmas. I was totally skeptical when I took the book off of the shelf at the book store, but it’s ridiculously awesome. If I ever aspired to write a book it would be one like that – you should check that out too 🙂
