I have been working on some illustrations
for some grade 2 or 3 classroom reading books. One is about
a little girl and her grandma - the description of the grandma
reads: "Gran is young and trendy - mid 40's". This
scares me a little mainly because Gran is 15 years older than
ME! Me? How can I be 15 years away from being a Gran's age?
Actually, being a gran could be kind of
fun. Soft floral dresses, violet or rose perfume, knitting
and heaps of cups of tea. So I drew a Gran who was young and
trendy with the only sign of age being a little flap of extra
skin around her neck. Now I have to go and draw some cats
on bicycles for a cute little story which reads a little like
a drug trip.
It's time to start thinking about goals
and dreams for next year. I don't mean goals like "get
my license" or "lose a few kilos" or any of
that sort of thing (however, both of which mightn't be a bad
idea), I mean good solid work / creativity related goals.
This year I set a few which seemed daunting and impossible
back in January but most of which I have actually achieved
in one form or another. They were things like getting my folio
out to publishers, follow up with a promotional thing (postcard
or whatever) every three months, get client work as a result
of this marketing and apply for that screen print course.
Next year I am thinking that the most important one will be
get my children's book off to my dream publisher.
This means that another goal will be to actually write and
illustrate a children's book. I have a few ideas floating
around; a good, solid plot and some sprightly young protagonists,
an ending and a beginning. This is a lot more than
I started with when I wrote 30 000 words last month so I have
a little hope for this one.
