200 Years of Edward Lear

Edward Lear was born in May 1812. To celebrate 200 Years of Edward Lear the Ashmolean museum in Oxford is having a show of his travel paintings and sketches. He was a remarkable artist. I am celebrating by publishing one of my favourite Edward Lear illustrations and limericks. Having had a couple of Barred Owls keep me awake in the middle of the night, I sympathise with this poor fellow.

The barred owls recording is hysterical. Quite a nice melodic sound though, compared to Melbourne’s possums which sound like grown men growling in our roof! We love Edward Lear too. One of my favourites:There was a young lady from Turkey,Who wept when the weather was murky; When the day turned out fine,She ceased to repine,That capricious young lady from Turkey.

I talked about Edward Lear for my children’s book illustration class this past spring and I of course had to show this image. The beard. THE BEARD! I love it.
