My Creative Space – 5.30am

mycreativespace012
Almost every Thursday morning I am woken around 5 by the noise of the rubbish trucks. As soon as I hear that familiar rumble and clunk I immediately feel a rush of addrenalin and panic as I think “Did we put out the rubbish bins?”. Every Thursday – without fail, and I think we have forgotten to put out the bins maybe twice in the last ten years. So I immediately remember “yes, we did” but by then I am awake and my nerves are fried. This morning, instead of lying in bed for an hour cursing the stupid rubbish trucks, I got up, made a cup of tea and sat out on the couch and wrote 1500 words. Brilliant.

I’m leaving my trashy adult novel for the time being and have started some writing for the Middle Reader age group which is the 7-12 year olds. I am writing fast and furious and the ideas are flowing. This is surely the best bit of the process – characters unravel and situations appear on the page seemingly from nowhere. I guess my Muse was sipping rooibos on the couch next to me this a.m.

The best idea’s come at the silly early hours in the morning, I know this because 2 of my children are really bad sleepers so I talk from experience! well done rooibos!

  2. What a good idea – I should do that on Monday morning – same thing happens to me! Great news on a new story – are you thinking of illustrations too?

I have that same adrenalin rush on Wednesday mornings, but fortunately the trucks come around here at 7:30 when I should be getting up anyway. Not being a true morning person, it seems unlikely that I would ever use any time before 10 AM productively, and I’m in awe of what some people can accomplish before I’m even awake.

I haven’t seen 5 AM since December of last year. But I know I would get so much more done if I would just wake up earlier, maybe not around 5, but even getting up at 6 AM. Good for you and your rooibos!

Great story. My nerves are being fried by the kookaburras around 5am every morning, man they are loud! Great you got something so productive out of being awake that early.

I love those times, everyone is still in bed, no children bickering, no noise and the house is quiet. A beautiful cup of tea and I can just chill 🙂 Then about 630 the chaos starts!

So if you can convince the rubbish guy to swing past your place every morning at 5.30am, you’ll have your new book churned out in no time. Sounds like a plan Stan. xx

  9. Oh I love it when that happens. There’s something really inspiration about waking up early and being so productive. Go you!

It’s so much fun writing for kids, isn’t it? I kept stopping writing my adult books to write far more whimsical stuff for kids. I’m re-writing a YA at the moment, and today I had a break-through on a chapter book that stalled.

Hi, I was just wondering what made you shelve the “trashy adult novel”? I am trying to write a novel too – I hope not too trashy… – and I find the battle within myself with self-doubts really hard to manage. But I also feel committed to seeing it through and i fear that if I start a new one, I will just abandon that in time too! I was wondering what your processes have been…
