Dear Nany

dearnany
I asked Amelia to clean up her room on the weekend and after about five minutes she said to me, “You know how Nanny cleans up my room sometimes, well what happens if she gets bored and needs a little break?” and I thought about my Mum and how she cleans and I said “Well, she wouldn’t actually stop until it was done, would she?” and Amelia totally agreed and I knew we were both thinking of the same image of my Mum as a whirlwind of action. Neither Amelia nor I are like that when it comes to being tidy – making mess? Yes. Putting it all away again? If we have to, and then it’s very slowly and reluctantly. So instead of going back to clean her room again, she decided she needed to sit down and write to Nanny to get some words of advice.

Translation:

“Dear Nanny, You know how my room is always messy, well I do try to tidy it up but I do not know how to do it. Can you give me some advice? From Amelia”

And instead of cleaning up the house for some afternoon guests right now, I am posting a blog post about it. So – there you go. Like Mother, like daughter.

Ah Amelia’s letter is fab, I luv Kiddie spelling, better than “propper” spelling. I’m rubbish at keeping up with cleaning, I just say it’s the Shabby Chic lived in look, it’s more homely!

There’s an American website – “flylady” – and among the adult advice and encouragement there’s a kid’s challenge of the day (the Riley challenge) where there’s one little task to do to get/keep your room clean. One day it might be to see how much rubbish you can collect and put in the bin in five minutes or less. The next it might be to find three things you don’t need anymore and can give away. There’s always a time limit and it’s always specific, so it can be done even without help from nana!I’m a teacher, and one of my favourite kids spellings was the story about the zoo-zoo-key bike.

This is too cute! I bet your mother’s heart will completely melt when she see’s it.

  13. So cute. And so much like me. I was going to suggest’s Fly Lady’s Riley challenge, but I see Jo-Anne’s beaten me to it!FlyLady is really good, if you can get past all the sugary sweetness of it. I’m in the middle of an experiment on my blog, following her 31-day starter challenge. It was slightly derailed following my husband’s accident a couple of weeks ago, but I’m getting back on track soon.

Believe me, there’s nothing like spending 15 minutes ticking off her task for the day to make you feel like you’ve achieved *something*…

  14. What a gorgeous post! So cute!!
