I am on the mend. Each day I manage to spend a few more hours out of bed which is such a good thing. I have been getting so bored and frustrated with my lack of energy.
I thought I would include today a photo of Amelia’s 6th birthday cake from when we were up in the country. It was the day before I fell apart with a hallucinogenic fever and looking back I now fully understand why organising any kind of birthday party seemed incredibly hard. The cake was from a packet and completely fell apart, the games were limited and the guest list was incredibly short but the whole thing taught me a little lesson – Amelia said to me “That was the best birthday party ever!”. It really doesn’t take much to make a kid happy (and enormous amounts of sweets and frosting will save any cake in the eyes of a 6 year old).
Happy 6th birthday my beautiful girl. Imagine that? 6!
Gorgeousness: Studio Violet
PS. Thank you for all the sweet get wells over the last week. It helped so much! xx
Happy Happy belated Birthday to Amelia.Very pleased to hear that you’re feeling a little better too.
My son turns 6 next week. isn’t it just the perfect age?so sorry to hear about your trip. Pneumonia is around at the moment. The best thing now is that you are well or at least on the mend. you should go out and eat at the best japanese restaurant in Melbourne and get smashed on Sake!
Happy birthday Amelia! Wow, I’ve been reading your blog since before she was born – back in 2002 I was in my last year of high school… now in 2008, doing a postgrad degree. Time flies, huh?(I love fairy cake too)
I am so glad you are feeling a bit better- it takes a long time after something so awful. try not to over do it (man, I sound like my nanna).Love your exploding cake !
Glad to hear your feeling better, the cake looks wonderful. I would have been happy with that too!Take care 🙂
happy birthday amelia! ah, my youngest just turned 9. so bittersweet. :^)lol re: pneumonia AND a child’s birthday party?! you’re lucky you’re still with us. ;^)
Glad you are on the mend.I love how adaptable kids are … and how simple their needs when all is said and done. Well done on getting through in one piece.Andi 🙂
I’m so glad to hear you are feeling better. What a lovely lesson to learn! I’ll be keeping it in mind next time I’m stressing. 🙂
your point is so well taken! I need to focus on that next time I’m stressing over the ‘perfect’ decor for a birthday party. what an adorably messy cake, and looks like it was definitely tasty! And I’m very glad indeed to hear you are feeling better. You can’t mess around with pneumonia! my friend Anna was recently put in the hospital for a week with it!My God bless you with a quick recovery and more energy!
I think that birthday cake looks wonderful. Chocolate, smarties and coloured candles – you really can’t go wrong with that.Glad to hear you are mending. And Happy Birthday to Amelia!
Glad you’re feeling better. For Connor’s birthday party I stood at the stove and made pancakes for all of the kids. Nothing 12 year old boys like more than that. Apparently his party was ‘awesome’ because of it.
As I’m reading your cake post ….Hannah (3.5 yrs): “I want THAT cake for my birthday mum. Is it my birthday soon?”
So thank you. Your cake looks like a lot more fun to make than the dog cake she was admiring last week.
Glad your feeling better. I know exactly why your little Amelia loved her birthday…because mommy did it! I really don’t think our kids could care less if we are like martha, they think we’re awesome just the way we are! Hope you a speedy recovery. Go slow, it will take a while!
I still can’t believe how long I’ve been reading some of the blogs on the web – it really hits home when I see the wee ones grow up! I remember reading your blog absolute ages ago before you had two beautiful girls. Strange to think how time flies. A very happy birthday to Lily and hope you’re continuing to spring back into shape after your bout. *Warm thoughts*
Get well wishes from me!nothing like kids showing us what is really important.
Glad to hear your are making progress and starting to feel a bit better. Kids love cake , oh yes they do!
Don’t worry about the cake…when my little sister turned one, my mum baked a big cake which duly collapsed in the middle after being brought out of the oven. Even though the cake looked like a gorgeous pair of chocolate breasts – my sister and the rest of the family remember the cake fondly! Feel better soon! 🙂
I started reading when my little girl was only 6 months old and Amelia a few months – lordy, 6 years goes quickly! Our birthday parties have been getting simpler and simpler – a specially decorated cake is mandatory and after that, it’s friends around for a play. As long as pass the parcel happens, everything’s sweet!
Coming back to add: I really want the studio from Studio Violet! thanks for the link – I like Camilla’s work and it’s great to see in this setting.
I agree with Amelia – it looks yum to me.
Yes, great to hear you starting get better! Yes, being bedridden is awful and gets boring very quickly….Take it easy and get your strength back little by little. Wishing sll things good to you.and Happy birthday to your big girl of course !:)
so sorry to hear you’ve been ill claire, but glad you are recovering now. That birthday cake looks fab, and as good as I can manage even at the peak of health! How amazing that amelia is now 6! it’s crazy isn’t it how the time goes past with small girls around… get well wishes are winging their way from scotland…x
I’ve just noticed the multi coloured sprinkle sandwiches in the top right of the picture too! What a fantastic birthday tea this must have been…
I’m sorry the mending is so slow…and Happy Day to a pretty girl!
Happy Birthday, love the cake! 🙂
Grace’s 8th birthday cake recently wasn’t much to look at either. It sounds like you all had a wonderful day and I am glad to read that you are on the mend.
Your coping mechanisms must have been turned up to full! Kids parties can almost do me in.Speaking of baking, my daughter googled the recipe for chocolate brownies the other day, and unbeknown to me, was using Your recipe!!!They worked pretty well, some were more gooey than others, but we ate those ones right out of the tray.Hope your getting stronger xx Liz @ Betty jo
Happy birthday Amlia ! The same day (14 oct) I was 50 years old !!! And I cooked for me a big cake too 😉
I’ve been reading too since before Amelia was born – happy birthday big girl, and continued get better soons to you Claire!
