Some bits for a Thursday
I have always loved Dover books – their colouring books and paper doll books reach far back into my childhood. Do you get the Dover sampler emails? If not, take a look. It’s free to subscribe, and while it’s mostly just a clever marketing campaign for their books, each week you are sent some free clip-art samples which I often find interesting and pretty inspiring. Take this week’s Mondrian painting (above: Broadway Boogie-Woogie by Piet Mondrian) – imagine that as a quilt!
Speaking of subscriptions, a month or so ago I subscribed to Mixtape Zine, Justine and Nichola’s awesome craft zine which is always packed full of good stuff and chatty, very readable articles, reviews, columns and interviews. My latest one just arrived and, as usual, it’s great. I am this months’ Crafty Lady Profile – and I always love Simmone’s pages (because, honestly, ever since I read Notes from the Teenage Underground, I would read anything Simmone wrote, even if her target audience for literature is a good… hmmm… 20 years younger than me ), and Gemma’s Sunny Buick interview is cool and makes me want to be a beatnik and live in paris and become a tattoo artist… and then I remember I am me and I turn the page and there’s an article on greening your child’s birthday party, and then an article on Tupperware and LOTS more… so you can’t beat Mixtape! And it’s cheap!
And have you checked our your house on the street view in Google Maps? It’s SO weird. And our fence is SO ugly. They must have been around our area in the middle of Summer because everything looks horrible and dead and dry. Weirdness.
The google maps thing is so weird. The photos are pretty old. We’ve installed new windows and a front fence since the photo was taken so it doesn’t really look like our house.Loved your interview in Mixtape!
o lord! A mondrian inspired quilt – I love this idea.PS Thought I had a chance on your bunny dolly but I’m afraid I’m not cashed up enough. Do you know I felt so sorry for my dolly that I had to bid on her because she was bidless for forever. I’m appalled to say I’m still the highest bidder at 30 bucks. Perhaps this might be an indication to remain in my day job. Shoot.
It is quite odd to see everything at street level in Google maps. Mr HB (a techie) and I spent time poring over these last night. While Mr HB was rabbiting on about the cameras and software they must have used, I was pondering the big issues (Can you see number plates, people’s faces and inside front doors? And what if you were standing in your front garden in your fluffy slippers and dressing gown when they took the photo?)
I just checked and yes the google map is a bit bizarre…Our photos has a truckload of insulation batting being unloaded in the driveway!! That was early summer.
That Google maps is a little a little scary, that anyone can google your address and see your home (if they know your address that is).I’m so glad you like the new issue of Mixtape, we think this is our best yet!
Yes! We were just looking at Google Maps last night. I found it a little unnerving. But fun. We went to look at the street view of Matt’s office – you can see him (or his blurred shadow, anyhow) sitting at his desk!
I’m hoping to head in to Sticky after work tomorrow to pick up my copy of Mixtape – I love it too! I didn’t know you could subscribe, will have to look into that…I also find seeing our house on Google kind of weird and freaky!
Street view has managed to just miss my house – there are pockets here and there which are not photographed yet. I think I’m happy about that! But I did have fun checking out a lot of my previous homes.
Yeah, we totally realized that on Google Maps you can, at least theoretically, see somebody on the toilet through the skylight in our upstairs bathroom. Nice. Needless to say, we’re getting shades.
I went to Dover and requested the email samples. And wow there truly is some cool stuff at that company. I am rather interested in the Art Deco Paper Dolls.Speaking of quilts. I will have my own little baby just after New Year and I am thinking of creating a small patchwork quilt especially for the little bub. Not quite sure yet if I’ll go with someone else’s design or if I will prepare my own design for it.
I am so glad to know I am not the only one who found it a bit unsettling to see my house on Google Maps. Especially since traffic at our house is rare, and my car was in the driveway, so I know I was home, but I never saw them go by… doodoodoodoo…. and my Mom, who lives in rural Nevada, her house is on the street view, but my grandparents’ house in heavily populated Southern California is not. Straaaaaange!
Yep Google maps just a tad too freakin Big Brother for me…. I felt very strange realizing someone had pulled up outside my house a pictured it for the world to see. Surely there must be some ‘stalking’ issues there?I’m gonna get myself some of that mixtape action 🙂
wow… this is funny and weird! I wrote about the exact same Mondrian painting as inspiration to a quilt some weeks ago in my blog! 🙂
