Cuts like butter
I finished cutting out my stencils a couple of days ago. Karena was right — the oiled kraft paper is brilliant, kinda greasy but totally enjoyable to cut into. I can see how people get into paper cutting now.
Unfortunately our littlest family member is miserable and sick again. This time with the HORRIFIC sounding Hand Foot and Mouth disease. Ah dear. Luckily it’s not as bad as it sounds and apart from a rash she is quite cheerful enough to run around and around the doctor’s waiting room screaming “YA YA YA YA!” really loudly. But sick again she is. A friend of mine exclaimed recently (I think it was during the great croup fiasco) “you have all come down with a bad case of the Creche!”. So true. Two days of childcare a week gives me time to work and time for sanity, and Lily enjoys it… but the sicknesses which seem to go around are definitely a major drawback. It’s like a little bubbling petri dish in there. On the one hand it could be said that she is building up her natural immunity, on the other she’s been pretty much under the weather since the beginning of February which is a long time now, and that’s no fun. So we are in quarantine for a few days and I will be lurking around The Crafty Crow for some ideas for fun things to do. My stenciling will have to wait.
I had a co-worker who used to call the place she sent her daughter for childcare a typhoid hospital. My kids don’t go to childcare but we were still sick all winter. I’m sending you healthy vibes.
Oh dear…Must be something in the (cold!) air — our youngest is sick, too, with a horrible chesty cough and rising temp. I’m hacking away, too.
GO AWAY BUGS! You’re not wanted! Shoo!
My son caught that in kinda and the same day I got it too. Very painfull, especially in your throat and on the tips of my fingers .. no good for blog hopping at all!I do hope she gets better soon, lots of icecream will help keep her throat happy.
I had hand foot and mouth disease a few years ago. Felt absolutely fine, but had a contagious rash, so I had to stay home from work – such a pity! Hope she’s over it soon. We are in quarantine too (for two more weeks!) – our youngest has been exposed to chicken pox, and was too young to have had the vaccine. I know how you feel!
I hope all the sicknesses past quickly. And your friend is right about ‘creche sickness’- it’s amazing how it tends to come with six week regularity!I love the look of your stencil. It looks like it was a lot easier to do than the way I do my stencils- which has always been with acetate.
Sorry to read that your little one is sick. Hope she’ll be better soon.Do you know that creche is the portuguese word for daycare too?, for what I know it is used in portuguese, english and french at least. We had a bad case too, to the point that we had to give up and M. (my daughter) stayed home for a few months more. Now she is back and loving it.
And a lovely buttery colour too. Looking forward to the end product.
Oh no! I hope she feels better soon!I have read that children that don’t go to pre-school get just as sick when starting kindergarten-they just delay the process! Then of course, some kids just seem to get sicker than others 🙁
oh yeah – we used to call it ‘creche-itis’. Ours lasted about a year and I think just about every virus and bacterium known to humanity, apart from cholera, typhus, and bubonic plague has crossed over our threshold. All within were, (at one point), possibly the sickest we’d been in our entire lives. There may be something to that ‘immunity building’ theory tho’. Since our wee girl started school this year, she’s passed untouched through the flames of flu, virulent (and impressive) bouts of gastro, and all sorts of disfiguring skin diseases. So far anyway…so perhaps there is a light at the end of the childcare tunnel. Apart from the end of eye-wateringly expensive fees.
I do empathise.
We have had a couple bouts of that, and you are right it sounds far more dreadful than it really is.My youngest was born when my oldest was 2 and a half. Oldest brought everything home, making his baby brother ill ALL the time (11 ear infections in 10 months)yet, never really getting sick himself. Petri dish, indeed!Hang tough.
That stencil is amazing!!!Hope your little one is feeling better soon. In November I started working a few days week at my local gym day care. I can take the kids with me which is great, but WOW!! My kids have never been sick so often. We have had everything from flu to mono. No fun!! We just got over the mono. Not as severe in small children usually, which was true for my 5 year old, but my poor 3 year old was so sick! Poor thing…..Hopefully summer will be a healthier season!! 🙂
I love your stencil. The cutting looks so intricate, I dont know if I would have the patience to cut all that out! It’s great!Hope your little girl recovers soon.
eek…you might want to look into the sanitation practices at your daycare center…hand foot and mouth disease is communicated from feces to mouth, most often in daycare centers where the staff don’t sufficiently wash their hands after changing diapers.
Me and Ollie have been sick off and on since January and Ollie (age two) is not in creche. We just blame it on our crappy weather!
Love the stencil!I just got over that whole hand and mouth thingy myself. Before this, I’d never even heard of it! Couldn’t swallow or talk for two days. Of course, this is the first time munchkin’s been in daycare, and I work at a high school. I call the students “walking petri dishes” and I think I’ve caught every bug that came out this winter, sometimes more than once!Hope everyone gets well soon!
Sorry this is off the point but now I’m thinking of yummy crumpets with melting butter after your title! 🙂
Love the stencil… can’t wait to see the end result!
hey, stumbled on your website, which i think is beautiful. i’m from Singapore, and we’ve had quite serious cases of HFMD, with a few children dying from it a few years ago. just to let you know that there are about 60 (!!) different strains of it, so please, do keep your children in, and they will be better soon. however, it’s not really something that child will develop immunity to, as there are so many different strains. it’s not to scare anyone, it’s just so you know. i do think we have it harder here in South-east Asia because of our weather etc.after all that…i hope everyone stays safe and healthy!!
I face the same dilemma. My daughter (2.5) is at childcare two days a week. It’s wonderful for my sanity (I’m 6 months pregnant) but we seem to be sick with a new cold/bug every fortnight. I took her to a naturopath who has put us on zinc to boost immunity – who knows what’s best: time out for me vs constant illness/tiredness/grumpiness. We’ll persevere for the moment. Really enjoying your blog and your etsy finds. Thank you.
hi miss loobylu! :)apparently it’s 17 months (a strange number) that it takes for wee-ones to develop a good immune system from childcare/school. i hope she feels better soon – hang in there! x p.
I’m so sorry your sweet little one is sick again. Give her lots and lots of hugs. :)Jeni
Great blog.Sorry to hear about little Lily being sick. I now can relate to having sick little ones and the distress it brings to the family. I have a 10 month old who has a bit of a chesty cold but much better now. I would love to put him in day care once a week but it is so hard to find availability in the eastern suburbs of Sydney.
I’ve never heard of oiled kraft paper.I don’t know whether we have it in here Australia.
Are there any other names it might go by?
Hi, it’s me again…I just read down further in your blog to your post from the 23rd and found out how you made the ‘oiled kraft paper’. I’ll have to get some linseed oil and give it a go over the weekend.
~ I have days like this, so please bear with me!
You are not wrong, daycare is just one big “petri dish” – what a perfect way of summing it up. My poor wee sausage has had it all, TWICE, in the past six months. Hope the hand, feet and mouth get better soon!
