Fabric fretting

I took my first two images down to the printers in Richmond today so that they can print off some proofs ready for June’s exhibition. It felt great to hand them over and feel as though it’s all starting to come together. It also felt quite good to get back from driving to and from Richmond. I still find driving to be extremely stressful so a challenge like that was something I have been lying awake worrying about for the last few nights. Where will I park (a concern because I still have never executed a parallel park)? How will I manage a right hand turn back out into Swan Street? That kind of stuff. Regardless, I did drive to Richmond, find a park and survive to tell the tale, and what’s more it gets easier every day.
On the way home I stopped and checked my PO Box and found my back-tack parcel for stage one with fabric, ribbon and buttons to make a sewing kit to send to my secret buddy.

For those of you who haven’t been to the back-tack website here is a snippet of what the whole idea is about:

“Back-tack is a craft-come-sewing swap with a twist. You send fabric and anything else you’d like your partner to use in creating their notions holder, like zippers, buttons, ribbon, to someone (they don’t know who you are, you do this anonymously), and receive fabric from someone (anonymously). Once you’ve received your fabric/notions you get to work sewing a notions case (you’ll be sewing for a different person than the one you sent fabric to) and then filling it with items you think your fellow back-tacker would like (read their blog!) and sending it on to them for them to enjoy. You will be sending the pouch to a different person to the one who sent you the material.”

This is an interesting challenge for a control-freak like me, as part of me wishes I could have been the one to choose the fabric and embellishments for my final partner, as it is impossible for the person who sent me my package to have known what her tastes are like not knowing who she will be. Likewise, I have sent off a package of fabrics to my first partner based on my idea of what she likes… but she is not the one who will end up with the kit that she makes and I have no idea what the person who she is making the kit for really enjoys. Perhaps she likes 80s inspired punk fabrics, or checks or gingham or something else all together. Fabric is so personal! And so this is the challenge. Perhaps I am taking this all too seriously and I need to lighten up — and after all, this is the challenge that we signed up for!

I also went over to Patchwork on Central Park yesterday and picked up some green fabric ready for the next bunch of pear pincushions. I particularly like this one of which I could only buy a scrap:

Now it’s time to do some work…

  1. If only there were a way of getting about in a car without having to turn right. I’d be happy to live having never made a hook turn, too.

  2. I love the fabric that you bought a scrap of, the orange looks so vibrant. So exciting about getting the images printed, that makes it all seem real doesn’t it?

  3. If you put off driving till you’ve passed your teens, then you will always drive with an accent! Don’t worry though — you’re one of many of us!

  4. It is possible – my husband’s mother did it all her driving life – though she gave up driving in her early 50s. Poor Grumpy remembers excruciatingly long trips as his mother took them on left-turn only circuitous routes.

  5. I have had similar back-tack dilemas- I’m hoping what I sent my first partner is something they like, so they’ll feel inspired.I love your orange/green floral- did they have any other pieces? I’m working on an oranges and greens floral collection and have picked up a couple of things from Patchwork on Central. Great shop!

  6. Soon you will wonder what all the fuss was about…I have only been driving for just over a year…and only because my daughter was born, and often I find my self wondering what I was so scared of? I was wondering if the big bad book store (sounds like a line from You’ve Got Mail) started with a ‘B’ and in that case you may not have missed out on your Home Companion mag but were simply a little early. Over here in Adelaide we havn’t got the new issue out yet…LOVE the green fabric, I hope there will be a chance for a pear to come and stay at my house!

  7. Well, I didn’t sign up for backtack because I share your fears about creating something with materials chosen by someone else. I am sure, however, that you will come up with something amazing.

  8. I’m feeling the same control freak nervousness about the Back Tack! And trying desperately to let go of that and just roll with it. Remember that you can add lots of things from your own stash to make it “you” and your recipient too!

  9. Ooooo! I love the pear pincushions!! If you decide to sell them at some point, let me know!

  10. I know what you mean about the back-tack conundrum… I’ve been going through the same mental gymnastics – what style, what colors, what embellishments???

This reminds me of a friend’s favourite expression: “two wrongs don’t make a right, but three lefts do.” Doesn’t really translate to driving on the left side cultures, though…. “two rights don’t make a wrong, but three lefts do” is just confusing!

what is a “notions case”? does this mean it could be anything?
&& where did the first batch of pear pincushions go? i wanted to buy one for a close friend who adores pears, but i could never figure out how!

  13. Come and try the highways of Los Angeles for conquering your fears–you’ll be a pro in no time!

  14. I love hearing about everyone’s driving anxiety, as I am the queen of steering wheel jitters! Only here in the States it’s the old left hand turn; and that is if you are lucky enough to find a notch in the road that allows lefts!!
I adore the fabric scrap! Reading your site always brightens my day. Glad you could get ME internationally.

  15. I’m glad to see that other back-tackers are worried about what they sent out, my friends all told me I was being silly getting concerned over it.
If we all feel like this then we should all hopefully be open to loving what we get to work with and finally receive.
