A month of minor musings

I thought I might write an update every day of this month. That would be a turn up for the books and I am really not sure how practical this idea is. Perhaps I can manage it if some days are just short ones.
My boot camp cardigan is almost done. I am speeding through the last sleeve but am about to run out of wool which is totally annoying as it only comes in 200g balls. I am planning to knit a little flower to stitch onto the front of the cardigan to liven it up a little. There is a really cute flower pattern in the Rowan Junior book (seen here stitched onto a bag) which can be done in two contrasting colours. Maybe I’ll go ahead and order the wool plus a contrasting colour and use the extra to make more snake scarves.

The dairy free diet is back on for Amelia J as two days after reintroducing cheese and milk I noticed that she was rubbing her hands together in a funny way – kind of wringing them in a nervous manner. Mum noticed it too the next day and I had a look at her wrists to discover they were looking red and irritated – as were the inside of her arms. So back to soy it is. I might try reintroducing dairy again in a month or so but until then I might just have to finish off those cheese biscuits. At least we can now say for sure that it is the dairy that causes her eczema.

Big-P and I have just started browsing through the real estate websites again as the time is coming up for us to move out of Mum and Dad’s and find that place of our own. We have been here for a full year now and it’s going to be very difficult to move away from all the help and support and company we have here but it’s going to be really very nice to be our own little family again. We have our hearts set on a particular suburb that isn’t too far away from friends and family and is on the train line for Big-P to get to work… we shall see as our hearts were broken multiple times when we were looking in ideal suburbs last time.

this may sound totally obvious and schoolmarmish, but make sure you ask for the same dyelot when you order the new batch of yarn for your cardie.
i’d heard it a million times but didn’t take notice until it happened to me, and i swear you couldn’t tell by just looking at the balls of yarn side by side or even the whole time i was knitting the garment – you could only tell after being knitted and under good lighting (e.g. sunshine), which made it quite obvious. earrgh.

  2. Thanks Erin! This did actually occur to me but then I decided that I wasn’t going to worry about it as all that will be left to do is the band around the edge of the cardigan and the flower and I figure it won’t matter if there is a teensy bit of contrast. I may regret this!

  3. Poor Amelia. I know what it’s like to have eczema because I’ve had it since I was a little girl. I’m not sure if you’ve taken her to a dermatologist yet, but if you do you should go to Annette Callan. I’d give you her address but mum has it and unfortunately she’s overseas right now. I know Annette is in the Malvern-ish area (Where that wool place is that I told you about).
I found a little site you might be interested in. It’s about spinning your own wool: http://www.joyofhandspinning.com

P.S. Dimmey’s is have a sale on Wool! $1.99 a ball for any kind. Uh oh. What if Amelia is allergic to wool?

  4. Good luck woth your new home searching! I know how frustrating and rewarding it can be. I hope you find something soon!

  9. It’ll pass the eczema, be patient. And as for suburbs, brrr. We have an appointment with a real estate agent this friday, to LEAVE the darn suburbs.

If that flower on the Rowan Junior bag ends up being crocheted(?) there’s a good (free) pattern on Knitty for a (definitely) knitted flower on the cardigan pattern… I’ve tried it & it’s easy!

    Hi…
my daughter has been lactose intolerant since the moment she came into this world, and now she is 15.A few weeks ago we found several fantastic cheeses at the local deli that she can tolerate – Yay! I thought you might like the names so you could try them out. One is a goats milk cheese called Kaprakaas and this has a great flavour, the other is a sheeps milk cheese called Kashkaval, which we have found is great for pizza but has quite a strong taste. Good luck with it all.
