Garden delights
At Collingwood College the kids are given the wonderful opportunity to grow their own fruit and vegies in the school gardens and are then taught how to prepare the seasonal produce as delicious dishes in a program started by Australian Icon Stephanie Alexander. Imagine if all schools had similar programmes. This seems to be one good reason to move to Collingwood.
And on a similar note, The Edible Schoolyard at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Berkeley, California.

I was in charge of a school garden when I was 11. It was fun. We grew all sorts of things and sent people home with tomatoes and chilli and sweet potatoes. We didn’t have the budget for a school kitchen but it was still wonderful watching the garden grow.
Went thru that. What’s so annoying about it is that it was on herbal plants. We had limited grounds that could really be good for planting root crops or what. Btw, did you know the Japanese Mint smells like guava.. or did I get that wrong? lol
What I really want to experience is the parenting and marriage thing that you see in the television as projects in school. Do they give that out in Australia as well?

On my way to work (in Colingwood) I catch the train with many little kids. They are all very individual with various Brunswick street stylings…Know I know where these little groovers spend their day!

I think it is great that more and more schools are adopting this kind of curriculum. The best learning comes through work that feels like play.
that is so great!! i wish more schools did that! also, add recycling to the programme and things would be even better!
How wonderful to think about. These kids will grow up with respect for the world around them. Hands on is a great way to learn.
