April's Theme: Recycled Monster Action (now closed).

Regina Rioux Gonzalez
Monster Crochet
"I make toys, mostly sewn or crocheted goodies. And this month's theme works
perfectly with a current group of little stuffed guys I have been working
on. They are called Veggie Tales of Terror and are made from found crocheted veggies I purchased from ebay almost two years ago. I then used different scraps of materials left over from other projects to finish off the monstrously homicidal veggies."

"She's definitely a cuddle monster as opposed to an "I'm going to eat you when your back is turned" monster. She's made of felt and embroidery floss handed down to me from my aunt, who had it handed down to her from a friend who had it handed down to her from her mom. In short, I have two large garbage bags of everyone else's leftover craft suplies!!! (but I'm not complaining!)"

"I used the foam from Oscar's old baby bumper as stuffing, that along with a bazillion bags of polyfill. Feels so good to play MOS again!"

"It was about to be hurled onto the dust pile with a cry of "Never come back!" when I stumbled upon this month's Month of Softies theme. And voila! Mr Maurice M. Monster was born! Not only is made of recycled scarf, but he's stuffed with wool scraps and the felt is left over from other, as yet undocumented, projects."

"So, I raided the closet and found an old wool sweater that my husband doesn't wear anymore because it accidentally went through the wash and shrunk...so it was already felted and ready to be made into something! I used some hand dyed wool scraps for the details, which I suppose is made from recycled sheep..."

"My monster is made from an old pair of corduroy pants. His eye buttons are from the household odds and ends box, his mouth is a piece of felted sweater, his eyes and teeth are felt scraps, and he is handsewn together with an old spool of thrift store thread. Fun! "

"here he is....Blahh! the recycled monster. He's probably not recycled as such, but he is made from anything I could find buried in my fabric box and bags. (I did cut up a table cloth I had made for fynn's christening) He is probably more of a bits and pieces monster"

"De-nim De-mons are the worst of all the monsters! They
love to feast on the seams of your designer jeans. This evil doer's name is Fade. There is no end to their appetite for your best blues."
Link

Lauren A.M.
"My contribution to this month's theme is my spiny-horned-forrest-glompeth named Boone. He's made from old fabric, mixed clay, pop tops and beads. He loves frolicing through island jungles but gets very upset if you call him an elephant. "

"Emma immediately claimed him. I’ve already had to do a repair job on his neck, as she’s managed to loved the stuffing out of him."

"Please meet Vlad. The black bits are made of an old jacket and the red bits are a sweater that I (ahem) accidentally felted. The teeth are made
from scraps of stuffed bunnies. He may look a little sad, but it's only a trick. Don't get to get too close...those teeth are sharp"

"'Monster of the Theatre' has been created from an old black velvet evening jacket, red stripe fabric from an old quilt, wool yarn from an holey sweater and a couple of bells from a well loved beanie. He's feeling pretty dramatic and ready to sally forth and upstage Machiavelli any old time! "

"Anyway the recycled bit of the monster is on his behind, as I used tiny pieces of fabric my mom bought about twenty years ago and never used."

"The “recycled monster” theme was perfectly timed since the mister & I only recently did a massive closet purge, leaving me with three bag-fuls of clothing that was on its way to Goodwill. But not before I salvaged the craft-worthy fabric!"

"My monster is made of used gloves. It's a friendly monster rather than a scary one. The other stuffed toys I make are always out of our used family clothes, and they are stuffed with old T-Shirts or other clothes cut to little pieces."

"Raincoat Turned Skirt Turned Monster
My friend Amihan was given a pink vinyl raincoat. She made a skirt from it. When I was in Madison, she gave me the scraps. I had them sittin' around. Today was the day to make something. I made this."

Chief-Ten-Bears
"My siamese bears are entirely made (by me) of cedar wood I’ve recycled from construction sites in my neighbourhood. I know it’s not soft but I’ve been dabbling in wood sculpture for a couple of years and it goes along with the theme of my newly launched blog"

"My monsters name is Booger Joe and he is made of an old sweat shirt that was headed to my husbands woodshop. The hair is bits of cotton I had left over from quilting projects. The eyes are extra buttons from various clothing items, and the stuffing is from an old pillow. Not too pleased with the mouth but he will do for my first attempt at softie making. "

"He's inspired by...well, the fabric! A gal in my crazyquilters group had a bunch of fabric from her Mom and the body is an upholstery fabric, the hair is stretchy fur. I thought the yellow fur was totally great for hair! And what monster doesn't have green paisley eyes? The eyes, mouth and nose are all hand stitched. "

"Meet our Monster Mama and Monster Baby, a.k.a. Monster Harriet and Monster Baby Harry. (Click to enlarge). It's our submission to this months Month of Softies. This was truly a collaborative effort--once I got the fabric and notions out, my 2 and 4 year old boys were completely intrigued and involved in the whole process--they took over!"

"i use an old fabric from a dress, a little bell from the old collar of my cat VASCA, glass beads from a old necklace, and some remains of felt"
Link

Abby Glassenberg
"His body is made
out of material from my mother-in-law's scrap bag. His furry head is leftover fabric from a teddy bear I made for my daughter. His eyes are buttons from a pair of pants that had way too many decorative buttons when I bought them. My husband suggests that I make him a Starbucks apron or a crossing guard's sash, but alas I have run out of steam. Initially, the idea was for him to be holding his head in his hands, but I like his head better on his neck. I don't have a name for him yet - any suggestions?"

"they are made of all recycled toys- and bits of found string/wire/twine
/cotton/fishing line/ anything that i was able to find- not buy. so they are monsters / they are soft/ they are recycled/ and they are from my imagination-"

Six and a Half Stitches
"Another little critter who lives behind the vases and bowls. He's very shy. And he has very big teeth, and should probably go see a dentist. He's quite afraid of the prowling cats, but likes to hum along to the theme music for Busy Buses."

"Sam
Based on the pattern of the original creature #4 made by my previous company, Monster #3, this new creature has a rather special carapace, pieced together from bits of fabric left over from every one of Monster #3's monsters: thus, the history of Monster #3 is literally embodied in this new creature. She's named Sam -- a tip of the hat (or a wave of a leg) to Gregor Samsa. "

Small Hands
"He's made from a batik which I originally purchased, before my girl was born, to use as a festive table cloth. Festive huh? It has been used and laundered several times and now my girl has taken it for future use in one of her sewing projects. His teeth and the whites of his eyes are from quilting scraps. The felt bits--well they're leftover from last month's MOS project."
Link

"Please meet Penelope. Her body is made from felt leftover from the hat and purse of this project. Her teeth are a broken hairclip. Her arms and shoes are from a Spaghetti Betty that came with a happy meal and her hair is from a scarf experiment for Barbie gone badly wrong. I hope that altogether she is better than the sum of her parts. At least, she was fun to make."

"My monster's name is Broadway Babe. She is made of an old tee shirt of my sisters. Some pompoms and buttons from my moms stash. And ruffled quilt binding that was lying around. Her mouth is denim and felt. Shes hand sewn
and the mouth is glued on. I never made a doll before it was very fun!!"

"a dinosaur made from an old pillow case I picked up for $1 at a garage sale. I had fun planning and sewing this one - usually I sew with heavy wools and tweeds, and this fabric is so light and cheerful! I'm still on a steep curve learning lots about 3D pattern making with every new attempt, but she did turn out pretty much as I'd hoped, aside from her sagging tummy... maybe she's had kids, too!"

" He's about 95% recycled materials. He's made of: 1 white cotton slip, 1 short-sleeved cotton shirt, 1 pair cotton pants, 1 short-sleeved fake fur shirt (big wavy stripes in middle), 2 napkins (arms), 1 beaded purse (on tail), 2 lace curtains (stuffing), 1 embroidered jacket, 1 yellow velvet dress (I originally made from a bedspread), quilting cotton scraps (tail), loads of scraps for stuffing. "as you can see she's not a monster exactly, but... : ) she is a vampire ballerina!
She's made from old baby clothes, scraps from a skirt I made my cousin, and scraps of milliner's fabric. Her bouquet is a little poinson mushroom I bought at a vintage shop."

"This guy started off with a drawing Otilija did. I asked her to design a new monster for me, she came up with tons of ideas and this is the one I chose to go with for this months month of softies. I have been wanting to try making a softie from Otilija's drawings for ages, inspired by Lizette Greco, and I also loved naive knitting's try as well."

"Here is Harriet, the Recycled Monster. Unfortuanately she hasn't come to terms with her position in life and dreams of someday getting a "Hollywood type makeover". She is content on most days however, to play in the garden and loves all kinds of flowers and bugs (not to eat--to play with)."

"I like softies that have a graphic appearance. You can design monsters with adding arms, legs etc. to it but you can also design monsters by leaving things away. So meet my monster 'Oneye'. A friendly little monster, still young at heart but during the years he has lost a few of his bodyparts: an eye, his arms and a few teeth."

"Painty McCurtainpants. Prominent features incude super-sensitive
antennas, a pom-pom belt, and blue eyebrows similar to mine circa 1996
before the nice lady at the salon told me about this thing called
WAXING. Made from an oil painting of a naked lady, zippers, yarn,
canvas, paintbrushes, curtains, felt scraps, and tacks."
