Exercise? Ugh.
Friday 26 April 2002

I have just been for a big walk down to the Health Food Shop and back, stopping at the library to put Artemis Fowl on reserve. I think this is the most exercise I have done (apart from some gentle yoga) in weeks and I can't believe how incredibly unfit I am.

oh my goodness... I have been walking for TEN minutes!!!!

Fish and chips, playing the Sims and chocolate are just adding to my general state of unfitness. Also, I guess while you're building a baby your body ceases to look after itself in the same way - there is so much else to be done. So much blood to pump and organs to develop. Next week I start an aqua aerobics class for pregnant women. I am worried about the usual things like finding a pair of bathers before then (while winter clothes fill the shops), wobbling around in public, and the terrible associations I have with the smell of indoor pools and childhood swimming lesson traumas. But I know it will be good for my fitness and good for my back and so I must soldier on.

Last night I did a little yoga and then listened to a "Guided Relaxation for Pregnancy" that a woman from my yoga class taped for me. Lots of deep breathing and accepting that my body has been designed for child birth and imagining all the women around the world who are pregnant; "Imagine the pregnant women in India in their saris picking rice, imagine the pregnant eskimo women in their igloos, imagine the pregnant women in Italy preparing pasta" - it really says all this! Then I had to imagine pregnant animals - cats and cows and deer... but apart from this rather curious spin on creating life it was really very peaceful and I think I felt the baby move. At this stage any movement is really only meant to feel like butterflies or nerves in your stomach and is extra hard to recognise if you have never experienced it before. Perhaps it was just my imagination but you never know.

Tonight we are off to a trivia night with a table of 8 friends. Our secret weapon will be our good friend Cookie Monster who won a car on Sale of the Century... we will be the quiz masters! Well, we have a better chance of answering at least some of the questions now that he is involved.
