I'm up early to go for a walk - except
now it's raining and M called to cancel in the sleepiest of
sleepy voices, so my motivation is fading fast. It's been
a week of sleeping badly and working hard and I am feeling
a little cross-eyed. I'm doing the illustrations for some
readers that kids in grade three or four will go through together
in class as they learn to read. I have finished two and sent
them off to the publisher, now I have another two to complete.
So January is busy. But February? Not busy.
I have two small jobs to do in the first couple of days and
another one or two that need chasing up and then a big gaping
hole of nothingness... I have been committing freelancer sin
- that is being lax with my marketing. My big rule that I
set when I first started this gig a year or so ago (apart
from"no day time television") was that no matter
how busy I am at any given time, I must spend one day a week
marketing - preparing mail outs, chasing up potential clients,
ringing publishers etc. I have had my head stuck in the sand
as I draw little kids finding bugs in the backyard.
So February will be a month of marketing
which will include updating clairetown
(although I am beginning to wonder if I should somehow bring
it and loobylu together so that I am updating only the one
site. Not sure how I will actually do that though - but I
haven't looked at clairetown since October last year... it
seems that more work comes to me through Loobylu anyway...
hmmm).
I have had another driving lesson which
managed to scare the beejezus out of me - it involved a lot
of traffic, inner city craziness and my instructor having
to use his break pedal as I failed to notice a red light.
Nice one.
I need something new to read. I am feeling
less and less inclined to read through the third book of the
Lord of the Rings - too many kings, too many battles. It was
read to me as a kid with my dad doing all the voices and somehow
all this epic massing of armies took on a different feel -
either that or it was easier to sleep through.
