Baby steps & big footprints
Sunday 21 October 2001

A sensationally sunny day... and tomorrow is going to be even warmer. Today Big-P and I drove down to Going Going Green to buy punnets of herbs ready to plant into our herb spiral... oregano, thyme, French tarragon, lemon grass, chilies, sage, Vietnamese mint and chamomile plus a bunch of little marigolds to jolly the place up. We are going to propagate some rosemary and mint out of Mum's garden and when the weather warms up a bit we will try basil and coriander.

On the way home we happened to be driving down a little side street with hardly any traffic when Big-P suggested I take over driving... Well, as you may or may not know, I have had my Victorian Learner's Permit for nigh on 10 years. The whole driving issue has become just that for me - an "issue". Every year I promise to myself and dozens of my buddies that I will get my full driver's license before I turn 25, (26, 27, 28, 29). And my friends (some of whom have been unlucky enough to try teaching me back in the bad old days when I was prone to take both hands off the wheel mid turn or do other equally frightening things) will nod patiently and try to sound supportive, knowing full well another year will tick by and they will have to continue to ferry me around.

The whole idea terrifies me beyond words. But for a reason that is too ridiculous to go into here, I have decided that things must change and fast. So today I moved over into the driver's seat, started the car up and reversed out into the road. Fortunately it didn't really matter which way I ended up heading as I had no idea which way to turn the wheel. I drove less than 100 metres and pulled in across 2 car parks.

good stuff eh?

Big-P told me I should reverse out again and keep going. At this point I had to have a little cry and told him that was enough for today. Baby steps we both agreed.

no no no - please! that's enough for today

I had to come home and take a Panadine and lie down with a hot water bottle for half an hour to get over my stress sore neck.

Once recovered, we went up to the allotment to meet up with Mum and check out our little plot and put together our herb spiral. All looked good apart from a massive foot print in the middle of the carrot patch (damn plot neighbours). One of the beans was up and quite a lot of the little carrots had sprung forth despite the trampling. We constructed and planted the herb spiral and let me tell you - it is an engineering marvel. I will have to get down there and take some snaps.

I'd Better fly now - we're off to dinner to celebrate Mum's birthday so I have to go wash this gardening dirt and anxiety sweat away. Link
