Sweet potato is supreme
Broccoli is the best green
Combining two oh so divine
Is a great way to kill some time

Ingredients:
1 teaspoon of olive oil (if your using a non-stick pot)
OR 1 tablespoon of olive oil (if you have a stick pot)
1 Onion (The size of the onion doesn't matter. The more you like it the bigger it can be. I had a large onion but it made me cry so I only put in 3/4)
1 sweet potato (600-700grams)
1 broccoli (about 200 grams worth)
4 cups of water
1 teaspoon of powdered stock or a stock cube (I used vegetarian chicken stock - I don't think it matters what type you use too much)
175 g of yoghurt
Extra water

How to
Take and onion and chop it up.
Put it in a largish pot.
For 20 second cook the oil
Just on simmer not on boil.

Stir in the onion 'til sticky and soft
They'll begin to brown and start to waft.
If they go dark way to quick
Turn the heat down just a lick.

With the saucepan off the stove
Put in chopped sweet potato
Add to this the broccoli
Bite size pieces they all should be

Chuck in water and stock
For 30 mins cook the lot
When it's done you can tell
It will squish under fork really well

Mash it all up - not too much
Pureed green & orange resembles chuck
Let it cook for another twenty
Leave it to cool -an hour is plenty

If you think it's a little thick
Some extra water will fix it quick
Stir in yoghurt, simmer till hot
Scrumptious soup is what you've got.

Eat. (Serves about 4)

PS stir occasionally when cooking/simmering/etc.
PPS Tastes better than the poetry implies.

A great recipe should always be screwed with

  • You can't put the yoghurt into hut stuff or let it boil other wise it all separates. It still tastes OK but doesn't look so good.
  • I don't like yoghurt - why I put it in the soup I can't quite figure out, but I tasted pretty good anyway. I suspect sour cream would work just as well - maybe better but I'm trying to impersonate a svelte person.

It is a bit bland without something extra - but there are many other options to explore:
  • Some garlic at the onion stage could be mighty fine (my taste tester hates garlic so I didn't try it)
  • Nutmeg could work.
  • Salt and pepper are always an option.
  • Maybe some cheese at the end?
  • Sweet chilli works with sweet potato chips - maybe with the soup… (not so sure about this one though)

Go wild. Sweet potato, broccoli and onion are really cheap - you can stuff it up several times before it become a complete waste of money.

Submit a story to the cooking hall o' fame. Make it around about 400 words... a poem, or a tale, or a joke or anything based around a recipe or a cooking experience. If you have the recipe submit that too... cheers!
