Project Baby’s Room - Week Three (or so): Quilt and Paint Beginnings
I finally finished the bulk of the top of quilt I am working on for the baby’s room. I still need to put on the borders but I am quite liking how it looks so far. It’s incredibly simple and not terribly creative but the fabrics are all sweet and I can always aim to work on something a little more adventurous for when she moves into her big bed in a couple of years time. If this baby does, in fact, end up being a boy this quilt may be just a little too girly — but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
Please admire this photo I took of the quilt from floor level. Mostly please admire the fact that I got down on the floor to take the photo and then managed to get back up again without calling for help! (it wasn’t pretty).

Something that isn’t going to be too girly is the colour of the bedroom walls. Big-P has been working on the baby’s room over a couple of weekends and it’s looking really lovely - we ended up opting for a Porter’s Paint in a low sheen acrylic (so not totally VOC free, but not too bad none the less) in a colour called Skywriter. P has painted three walls in the colour at 50% strength and there will be one wall which will be at 100% just to give it a bit of interest.

It’s very hard to get a good photo in that room, especially on a gloomy day, but this is a close approximation anyway. It’s nice to look back on some of those inspiration photos I posted a while back and see that we found a colour we liked and were able to pretty much match it (looking at the first blue pic with the bright orange chair). I think ours has a little more red in it, which keeps it warm in a room with not a lot of light.
Next steps: Finish the quilt and painting (including trim and door), fix window frame, whip up some curtains to cover the ugly window frame, continue to sort huge amounts of clothes into various boxes for storage and move in furniture.

I’m pretty sure the baby won’t care what colours the quilt is, so nor should you worry about it. In either case.

I especially love how you used pictorial fabrics as well as patterned ones. Your little one will enjoy looking at the bright patterns and then when she’s older, the fun little playground scenes! I can’t get over how fabulous those colors look together! Wonderful!

Hello from London…I’ve been following your lovely blogs with great interest! I was wondering which colour paint you would go for - I’m glad you chose the blue. Your inspiration photos ‘inspired’ me to paint my baby’s room in pale blue (I’m due in Aug). I love your blogs x Jo

Your quilt looks ace! I used the print of the kids in the playground to make a cute top for Grumbles - it’s one of my favourites!

I love your quilt and the colors for the baby’s room. My husband and I are also trying to get pregnant, and I have already purchased the “baby quilt” fabric! I hope I have patience not to cut into it until I get pregnant, and then maybe try to wait til I know if we’ll have a boy or a girl.. (the fabrics are a deep pink print, a pale green print, and white on white… it’d be really convenient if I could have a girl.)

You are amazingly brave with colour, I would never put orange with pink, nor would I put blue with orange. When you see it done it’s amazing, great job.

What a gorgeous quilt. You seem to get so much stuff made and done and all I see to do is sit around and talk about making stuff and the things I want to do. As ever you are an inspiration if only I could just get off my arse and do something creative.

Lovely color of blue. We just painted our whole house, to put it on the market. I chose a very neutral color, so I didn’t get “burn-out”. Love your site. ![]()

The quilt looks so beautiful. I love the way it looks all pieced together. I made a similar quilt a month or so ago and am very happy with the result. It was a good-size project with huge rewards!

You and Big P are doing a great job. What a lucky baby having such an amazing bedroom.
And well done on getting down to the floor and back up again. I remember how hard that was very clearly!!!
